Painting ocean waves in watercolour can feel challenging, especially when trying to capture the energy of breaking waves and the delicate effect of sea spray. Many tutorials rely on masking fluid, but in this demonstration video I want to show you how to paint powerful ocean waves without masking fluid, using simple watercolour techniques that keep your painting fresh and expressive.
Watch the Tutorial
You can watch the watercolour ocean waves tutorial in the video below, where I demonstrate the techniques step-by-step.
In This Watercolour Wave Tutorial You’ll Learn
- How to paint sea spray in watercolour without using masking fluid.
- How to capture the movement and energy of breaking waves
- How to keep your watercolour washes luminous and fresh
- How to create texture in ocean waves.
This lesson is suitable for beginner and intermediate watercolour artists who want to improve their seascape painting and learn new watercolour techniques.
Why I Don’t Always Use Masking Fluid
Masking fluid can be useful, but it can also feel a little unpredictable and sometimes creates edges that look too harsh in a watercolour painting. When painting waves and sea spray, I prefer to work with the natural behaviour of watercolour instead.
Using a wet-in-wet watercolour technique, the pigments blend and flow naturally on the paper, creating soft transitions that are perfect for painting water, spray and atmosphere. The effects are subtle and unpredictable in the best possible way, much like the sea itself.
Painting Sea Spray and Wave Texture
In this painting I use cling film and salt to create texture in the sea. These simple techniques produce beautiful organic patterns that suggest movement and spray without needing masking fluid.
Why Watercolour Is Perfect for Seascapes
The sea is constantly moving, shifting and reflecting light. Watercolour is an ideal medium for painting waves because its natural fluidity mirrors the movement of water itself.
By allowing the paint to flow and interact on the paper, you can create expressive and convincing ocean scenes without overworking the painting.
